O' Sergeant
(The Song)
By
SFC Jeff White
Jeff served four years in the Marine Corps before enlisting in the Army. Jeff arranged the words to this song from the original poem. He also wrote the music, sings the vocals, and plays all of the instruments. I hope that you find his rendition as moving as I have.
Semper Fi,
Mike
O' Sergeant
(The Song)
O’ Sergeant, what did I do wrong?
O’ Sergeant, I’m so sorry I let you down
I followed all your training,
And I followed all your rules
But that rocket came from nowhere
Where is Corporal Jones?
He was standing right beside me
I can see his boot right there
Please tell me he’s ok
Take care of Jonesy first
He’s got a wife and a little girl
And Jones is my best friend
Rest easy now Marine,
It isn’t all that bad
The Doc will be here soon
So rest easy now Marine
Oh Doc how bad is it
It hurts so badly now
And I cannot feel my legs
Easy son, now easy
It isn’t all that bad you will be all right
CHORUS
O’ Lord, please forgive me for my sins
Although it does not hurt so badly now
I’m feeling very cold
Lord forgive me, I’m so afraid to die
Please watch over Mom and Dad
And little brother Bill
I pray he remember me
And keep me in his heart
He’s only ten years old,
Lord I miss and love him so
I hope he’ll understand
Why I came to this far off land
Mom and Dad
I need to see you once again
And be your little boy
I love you both so very much
I am so very sorry that this will make Mom cry
Tell the people to remember our sacrifice
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to die
CHORUS
O’ Lord, please forgive me for my sins
Although it does not hurt so badly now
I’m feeling very cold
Lord forgive me, I’m so afraid to die
Please watch over Mom and Dad
And little brother Bill
I pray he remember me
And keep me in his heart
He’s only ten years old,
Lord I miss and love him so
I hope he’ll understand
Why I came to this far off land
